The virus is systemic, meaning it colonizes the entire vascular system of the hydrangea plant. It spreads primarily through vegetative propagation, as the pathogen persists in cuttings taken from infected mother plants.

While primarily infecting the genus Hydrangea, this virus can persist in various hydrangea species and cultivars, often going unnoticed by growers until a widespread infection occurs.
