The disease is classified as a viral mosaic, characterized by a systemic infection of the host plant. The virus can persist in the tissues of a perennial tree for a long time, gradually spreading through the vascular system.

Insects with piercing-sucking mouthparts, such as aphids and leafhoppers, often act as vectors. They transmit viral particles while feeding on the sap of infected and subsequently healthy plants.

An important transmission route is the use of infected grafting material during vegetative propagation. The disease can remain latent in nursery stock for extended periods without showing immediate symptoms.

The genetic material of the virus can integrate into the host genome, making the complete recovery of an infected tree practically impossible with current therapeutic methods.

The primary symptom is a characteristic mosaic pattern on the leaf blades. Leaves develop alternating patches of light green, yellowish, or whitish colors, creating a variegated mosaic effect.

As the disease progresses, leaf deformation and curling may occur. The tissues lose their symmetry, indicating severe disturbances in the development of chloroplasts and overall cell growth.
