Artichoke smut

The fungus develops mainly within the generative organs of the plant, gradually replacing healthy floral tissues with a mass of its spores. This process results in the total loss of the reproductive capacity of the infected specimen.

The life cycle of the pathogen is closely linked to the phenological stages of the artichoke. Infection often occurs during the bud formation period, when fungal spores are dispersed by wind or pollinating insects.

The mycelium of the fungus can overwinter in the debris of affected plants or persist in the soil as teliospores, waiting for favorable conditions to germinate in the following season.

The biology of the pathogen has been studied as a narrow specialist parasite that does not infect other agricultural crops, which simplifies the localization of infection foci.
