Calosphaeriales fungi

These fungi typically invade the host tissue through wounds, pruning cuts, or bark cracks. Once inside, they colonize the wood and cambium, causing progressive tissue degradation and interfering with the tree's vascular system.

The disease is characterized by bark and wood necrosis. The fungi form reproductive structures called perithecia, which develop beneath the host's bark, often appearing as small dark eruptions on the surface.

The life cycle involves the release of spores, which are disseminated primarily by wind and rain splash. This mode of transmission allows the pathogen to spread efficiently within a forest or orchard environment.

Scientific studies indicate that Calosphaeriales are often part of a complex of pathogens. They contribute to the weakening of the tree, which can lead to its eventual death if left untreated or if environmental stressors persist.

The primary symptom of infection is the localized wilting and death of branches, often leading to canopy dieback. Cankers may form on the stem, showing depressed, discolored, or cracked bark.

Close inspection of the necrotic areas reveals small, black, pinhead-sized structures (perithecia) piercing the bark. These are the fruiting bodies of the fungus and are a definitive diagnostic feature.

If the affected bark is peeled back, the underlying wood often exhibits brown or reddish-brown discoloration, indicating internal decay and a compromised nutrient transport pathway.

As the infection progresses, the canker may girdle the branch or stem, cutting off the water supply. This results in the sudden yellowing and death of the leaves on the affected branch.

In older trees, the disease may manifest as a lack of vigor, reduced foliage density, and the presence of numerous dead twigs, which are often overlooked until the infection becomes systemic.

Development of the disease is heavily influenced by tree stress factors, including prolonged drought, waterlogging, nutrient deficiency, or physical injuries to the bark caused by heavy machinery or pests.

High humidity and moderate temperatures are ideal for fungal growth and spore dispersal. During rainy seasons, the spread of spores from infected to healthy tissues occurs more frequently.

Poor pruning practices, such as leaving large stubs or failing to disinfect tools, facilitate the entry of pathogens into the host wood. Exposed wood is particularly vulnerable to colonization.

The presence of deadwood within the orchard acts as a reservoir for the fungus. Pathogens can survive as saprotrophs in dead branches, waiting for the right conditions to infect nearby healthy trees.

Weakened trees, especially those suffering from insect infestation (such as bark beetles), are more susceptible to colonization as their natural defense mechanisms are significantly compromised.

The primary damage caused by Calosphaeriales is the reduction of tree vitality, leading to poor fruit production and potential long-term loss of the plant stock in orchards and nurseries.

The necrosis of the stem and branches results in significant economic losses by reducing the aesthetic value of ornamental trees and the commercial quality of timber in forestry.

Severe infestations require extensive pruning or the complete removal of infected trees, which disrupts the structural integrity and productivity of the planting.

In dense plantations, the ability of the fungus to spread via wind and rain can lead to rapid disease outbreaks, necessitating intensive management to prevent widespread loss.

The systemic weakening caused by the fungus makes the trees vulnerable to secondary infections from other pathogens, further complicating the recovery and management process.

The foundation of effective control is stringent sanitation. This includes the regular removal of all dead or cankered branches, ensuring cuts are made into healthy, unaffected wood.

All pruning wounds of significant size should be treated with appropriate sealants or copper-based fungicides to block the entry points for airborne spores.

Maintaining tree vigor through proper fertilization and watering is essential, as healthy trees possess better defenses against fungal colonization and can often compartmentalize minor infections.

Preventative chemical sprays may be used in orchards with a history of fungal cankers to protect trees during periods of high spore activity or following major pruning events.

  • Disinfect pruning tools with alcohol or bleach between each tree.
  • Burn or bury all infected wood away from the orchard.
