Sedges

The genus has a worldwide distribution, occurring in diverse habitats, most notably in marshes, wetlands, and temperate meadows. Their ability to thrive in waterlogged soils where typical cereal crops fail makes them a unique category of plants in regional land management.

Botanically, sedges are easily identified by their solid, triangular stems and leaves arranged in three ranks around the stem. This structural characteristic differentiates them from true grasses, which typically have round, hollow stems. Their extensive rhizomatous root systems allow them to form dense mats, providing excellent soil stability.

Agronomic management of sedge focuses on managing soil moisture and timing harvest cycles. Because sedge tissues harden rapidly due to high silica content, it is crucial to harvest the biomass during the vegetative stage to maximize its digestibility as livestock fodder. In managed grazing systems, controlled stocking rates are essential to prevent overgrazing.
