The plant originates from the mountainous regions of Southeast Asia. Today, it is cultivated extensively across tropical and subtropical regions. Key production zones include China, India, Kenya, Sri Lanka, and Indonesia. These regions provide the essential high-humidity, warm climate conditions required for the tea bush to maintain year-round vegetative growth.
Botanically, the tea plant is a dense shrub with leathery, serrated leaves and small white flowers. In commercial agriculture, the plants are kept as low-growing hedges through regular pruning. This technique not only maintains the plantation density but also triggers the development of young, tender buds and leaves (flushes), which are the parts harvested for tea production.
Success in tea farming depends on specific environmental factors. The plant requires acidic, well-drained soils, typically with a pH between 4.5 and 5.5. Adequate rainfall or irrigation is mandatory, as moisture stress significantly reduces leaf yield. Nitrogen-rich fertilizers are essential to stimulate the vigorous growth of new green shoots, which are harvested frequently throughout the growing season.
Economically, the tea plant is highly valuable. Following harvest, the leaves undergo various stages of processing—including withering, rolling, oxidation (for black tea), and drying—to create different market products. Beyond leaves, tea seeds are occasionally processed for oil extraction, which is utilized in lubricants, detergents, and cosmetic formulations.
Like any major agricultural crop, tea is susceptible to several pathogens and pests. Common issues include fungal diseases such as red leaf spot and thread blight, alongside pests like tea aphids, mites, and various moth larvae. Effective management involves integrated pest management (IPM) strategies, emphasizing sanitary pruning and ecological balance to maintain sustainable yields.
