Metsulfuron-methyl

Description

Mode of action

Metsulfuron-methyl is a systemic herbicide belonging to the sulfonylurea chemical class, widely used for selective control of broadleaf weeds.

The mode of action involves the inhibition of the acetolactate synthase (ALS) enzyme, which is essential for the biosynthesis of branched-chain amino acids like valine and isoleucine.

Upon absorption through leaves and roots, the active substance is translocated through the plant vascular system to the meristematic tissues.

Once the enzymatic activity is blocked, cell division ceases, leading to the gradual chlorosis and necrosis of the target weeds within 7 to 21 days.

The compound is highly selective for small-grain cereals, which possess rapid metabolic pathways to break down the herbicide, ensuring crop safety.

What it targets

This herbicide is effective against a broad range of annual and perennial broadleaf weeds commonly found in wheat, barley, and oat fields.

Primary target species include thistle, bindweed, common lambsquarters, knotweeds, and various species of the cruciferous family.

Its high efficacy makes it suitable for integrated weed management programs, particularly in areas where other herbicide chemistries may have limited success.

The product provides reliable control even at low application volumes, targeting weeds at various growth stages from seedlings to established plants.

Targeted weeds show a marked sensitivity to the herbicide, making it a critical tool for minimizing yield losses caused by weed competition.

Rates and timing

Due to its high biological potency, metsulfuron-methyl is applied at very low rates, typically ranging between 5 and 10 grams of active ingredient per hectare.

The timing of application is critical; it is most effective when applied during the tillering stage of cereals while weeds are small and actively growing.

Adjuvants or surfactants are frequently added to the spray mix to improve leaf coverage and herbicide penetration through the plant cuticle.

Precision in dosage is essential to avoid potential phytotoxicity to the crop and to ensure that the herbicide residue levels remain within manageable limits.

Application should occur under optimal weather conditions, avoiding extreme heat or drought that could stress the plants and hinder the herbicide's effectiveness.

Restrictions

The primary constraint with metsulfuron-methyl is its residual activity in the soil, which necessitates careful planning of subsequent crop rotation.

Sensitive crops such as sunflowers, sugar beets, and oilseed rape may be adversely affected if planted too soon after the application of this herbicide.

Soil pH levels can influence the rate of degradation; in alkaline soils, the persistence of the chemical may be significantly extended.

To prevent drift and off-target damage, applications must be made using proper spray equipment and observing wind speed restrictions.

Always consult the regional safety labels and crop rotation guidelines before integrating this substance into a long-term agricultural management plan.
