Cicadellidae

These pests have a wide host range, attacking cereals, legumes, fruit trees, grapes, and various vegetables. Their feeding behavior involves piercing plant tissues and sucking out sap, which weakens the host plant and reduces its overall vigor. High populations can lead to total crop failure in extreme cases.

The life cycle of leafhoppers includes incomplete metamorphosis: egg, nymph, and adult stages. Depending on the species and geographical region, they typically overwinter as eggs inserted into plant tissues or as adults in debris. The emergence of nymphs in spring coincides with the active growth phase of many agricultural crops, making early detection critical.

The damage caused by leafhoppers is twofold: direct feeding damage (stunting, leaf curling, and yellowing, often called "hopperburn") and indirect damage through the transmission of plant pathogens. They are primary vectors for numerous viruses, phytoplasmas, and bacteria that cause systemic plant diseases.

Management strategies require an integrated pest management (IPM) approach to minimize chemical reliance. Essential methods include the removal of weed hosts that harbor populations, the use of resistant plant varieties, and the application of targeted insecticides when populations exceed economic thresholds. Maintaining healthy soil conditions and beneficial insect populations also helps keep leafhopper numbers under control.
