Biology and life cycle: The life cycle of Criconematidae takes place in the soil environment and includes an egg stage, four larval stages, and an adult stage. They are typically slow-moving and often remain sedentary for extended periods while feeding on a single root site. Their ability to persist in the soil for long periods, even in the absence of a preferred host, makes them difficult to eradicate.
Damage and severity: Feeding activity causes mechanical injury to root epidermal and cortical cells. This damage often results in root necrosis, poor root system development, and reduced uptake of water and nutrients. Infected plants typically show symptoms such as chlorosis, wilting, reduced vigor, and drastically diminished fruit or vegetable yield.
Control measures: Managing populations of ring nematodes requires a combination of strategies:
- Sourcing certified nematode-free planting stock.
- Practicing crop rotation with non-host or antagonistic cover crops.
- Applying soil fumigants or nematicides in severe infestation cases.
- Improving soil organic matter to enhance beneficial microbial communities that may suppress nematode populations.
