During their life cycle, these nematodes destroy mushroom tissues, which leads to a severe decline in product quality and substantial crop losses.

The biology and lifecycle of Sphaerulariidae are characterized by high adaptability. Females often undergo morphological changes, assuming a sac-like form, which allows them to produce a vast number of offspring. Infestations spread through substrate, contaminated soil, tools, and via insect vectors that serve as primary hosts for many species within this family.

The damage caused by these pests is characterized by tissue softening, distinctive odors, and the deformation of fruiting bodies. The pest spreads rapidly, especially under the high humidity and temperature conditions optimal for mushroom farming.
