Parrots
Parrots cause extensive damage to a variety of agricultural commodities. Their primary targets include cereal crops such as wheat, sorghum, and maize, as well as oilseeds like sunflower. In orchard environments, they are known to strip fruit trees of their yield, damaging apples, citrus, and various nut crops, often focusing on the most mature or sweetest produce.
The biology of these birds is characterized by high intelligence, complex social behaviors, and significant mobility. Their life cycle and foraging habits allow them to monitor crop development closely. Because they are long-lived and highly adaptive, they can identify and exploit new food sources rapidly, often returning to the same fields once they discover a reliable supply of grain or fruit.
The nature of the damage is both direct and indirect. Aside from consuming seeds and fruit, parrots cause physical damage by breaking branches, tearing husks, and stripping bark, which makes trees susceptible to pathogens. The damage is often widespread, as foraging flocks can decimate large sections of a field in a very short period, significantly impacting the overall farm profitability.
