Succineids (Succineidae) are a family of small, air-breathing land snails commonly referred to as amber snails due to the characteristic color and appearance of their shells. While often overlooked compared to larger slugs, these mollusks can become significant pests in various agricultural settings, particularly in nurseries, greenhouses, and moist crop fields.

Taxonomically, they belong to the order Stylommatophora. Their life cycle is highly dependent on environmental moisture; they thrive in riparian zones, marshy lands, and irrigation-fed gardens. These snails are hermaphroditic and lay eggs in clusters within moist substrates, allowing them to proliferate rapidly when favorable conditions persist throughout the growing season.
These pests affect a variety of crops, including leafy greens, vegetable seedlings, and ornamental plants. Succineids prefer soft, succulent tissues, often attacking the undersides of leaves or young sprouts emerging from the soil. Their preference for high-humidity microhabitats makes them particularly problematic in dense canopy crops and poorly ventilated greenhouse structures.
The damage caused by succineids typically appears as irregular holes or rasped patches on leaves. In severe infestations, the snails can completely skeletonize seedlings, leading to stunted growth or plant mortality. Furthermore, their slimy trails leave residues that negatively affect the quality and marketability of produce, especially with leafy vegetables intended for fresh consumption.
Managing succineid populations requires an integrated approach to minimize their habitat suitability and control their numbers:
- Improving soil drainage to eliminate damp hiding spots.
- Regular weeding to reduce the protective cover available to the snails.
- Using copper barriers or abrasive materials like crushed eggshells around susceptible plants.
- Applying certified molluscicides containing iron phosphate, which is effective against snails while being safer for the environment.
