The life cycle of Oestridae involves complex metamorphosis. Females are highly adaptive in their egg-laying strategies; some species deposit eggs directly on the host's hair, while others are larviparous, spraying larvae into the host's nasal passages or onto the skin. The larvae then penetrate the tissues, developing through several instars while feeding on the host's resources.
The damage caused by these parasites is known as myiasis. Infestations result in painful swellings, tissue damage, and secondary bacterial infections. In livestock, the economic impact is severe: it manifests as stunted growth, lower milk production, significant weight loss, and permanent damage to hides, which renders the leather industry raw material useless.
Control strategies for Oestridae are primarily veterinary-driven. Effective management includes the application of systemic parasiticides, such as macrocyclic lactones, which kill migrating larvae. Furthermore, maintaining high standards of pasture management and timely treatment of all animals in a herd during the autumn season are critical steps to interrupt the fly's reproductive cycle.
