Taxonomically, it is classified within the genus Verticillium. It shares similar biological characteristics with V. dahliae but occupies a distinct ecological niche, often impacting specific greenhouse and field crops.

The host range of Verticillium isaacii includes important economic crops such as lettuce, sunflowers, and various solanaceous species. It causes systemic infections that severely affect plant vigor and yield.

Upon entering the roots through wounds or natural openings, the pathogen colonizes the xylem vessels. The production of conidia and mycelial mass restricts water uptake, leading to the characteristic wilt symptoms.

Symptoms typically manifest as chlorosis on the lower leaves, which later progress to necrosis and browning. The wilting often occurs during periods of high physiological demand, such as sunny days.

Vascular discoloration is a hallmark of this infection. When the stem base is cross-sectioned, a dark brown or black discoloration of the vascular tissue becomes visible, indicating blockage of the xylem.
