Chickpea rust

The fungus colonizes the host tissue intercellularly, utilizing haustoria to extract nutrients. This specialized parasitic relationship allows the pathogen to efficiently spread across a field, particularly in mono-culture environments where host availability is high.

The infection affects all aerial plant parts, including leaves, stems, petioles, and pods. Severe outbreaks can lead to complete defoliation, which severely limits the plant's ability to produce assimilates necessary for grain filling and maturation.

The economic impact of chickpea rust is significant, potentially causing yield losses ranging from moderate to catastrophic depending on the timing of the outbreak. Seed size and quality are notably reduced, leading to lower market value and poor germination potential.

The development of the disease is highly dependent on environmental conditions, specifically temperature and humidity. Periods of cool to moderate temperatures and high humidity, accompanied by dew or light rain, are optimal for the germination of urediniospores.

The disease cycle can repeat several times throughout the growing season if environmental factors remain favorable. The inoculum can survive on crop debris or volunteers, serving as the primary source of infection for the subsequent planting cycle in the region.

The most distinctive symptoms are small, circular to oval pustules (uredinia) that appear on both leaf surfaces. These pustules are typically cinnamon-brown in color, surrounded by a chlorotic halo, and rupture the epidermis to release thousands of spores.

As the plant matures, the uredinia often transition into dark brown or black telia. Heavily infected leaves become chlorotic, wither, and abscise prematurely, giving the field a scorched or "rusted" appearance, which drastically reduces the canopy's photosynthetic efficiency.

Integrated pest management strategies are crucial for controlling chickpea rust. The use of resistant or tolerant cultivars remains the most sustainable approach to minimize the impact of the disease on yield and quality.

Chemical control involving the application of systemic fungicides, particularly those containing triazoles or strobilurins, is effective if applied early. Additionally, cultural practices such as crop rotation, residue management, and adjusting sowing dates to avoid peak infection windows are recommended.
