Systematically, this fungus is an imperfect stage often associated with various woody hosts. It is widely recognized for its ability to persist in plant debris, serving as a primary reservoir for annual infection cycles in gardens and plantations.

Microscopically, the fungus is characterized by dark-colored, septate conidia. These spores are designed for dispersal by water splashing, allowing the pathogen to spread efficiently within the canopy of a host plant during wet weather.

The life cycle of the pathogen is closely tied to environmental humidity. While it overwinters as mycelium in fallen leaves or twigs, the onset of spring warmth and moisture triggers the maturation of pycnidia and the subsequent release of spores.

Accurate identification usually involves morphological examination of the pycnidia and conidia under a microscope. Because the genus Hendersonia contains many species, specialized training is often needed to distinguish this specific pathogen.

This pathogen primarily targets the foliage, resulting in localized tissue death (necrosis). In cases of high infection pressure, it may also affect young stems, causing wilting and overall plant decline.

In nursery settings, the damage can be particularly severe. Reduced photosynthesis due to leaf spotting affects plant vigor, making young specimens prone to environmental stress and opportunistic secondary infections.

As the infection progresses, affected leaves may become chlorotic, curled, and ultimately shed from the plant. In extreme cases, a significant portion of the tree's foliage may turn brown and wither prematurely.

Good horticultural practices, such as proper spacing and regular pruning, facilitate better air circulation. Reducing humidity within the plant canopy significantly inhibits the germination of fungal spores.

Maintaining plant vigor through balanced fertilization and appropriate irrigation helps the host to mount a more effective natural defense against the infection, reducing the severity of symptoms.

Monitoring the plantation during wet seasons allows for early detection. If identified early, local control measures can prevent a localized spot from becoming a widespread epidemic across the entire plot.
