Hemp streak is a viral disease caused by the Hemp streak virus (HSV), which belongs to the Virgaviridae family and the Tobravirus genus. It is an obligate parasite that requires a living host for replication.
The virus consists of rod-shaped particles containing a single-stranded RNA genome. It systemically infects the plant, invading various tissues including the phloem and xylem.
The virus spreads via mechanical transmission, contaminated tools, or biological vectors such as nematodes and sap-sucking insects that pierce the plant cell walls.
Identification in the field relies on characteristic visual symptoms. However, confirmation requires specialized diagnostic techniques such as ELISA or RT-PCR to detect viral proteins or nucleic acids.
The pathogen can survive in soil or on infected plant debris, acting as a primary source of inoculum for the next crop cycle if conditions are favorable.
What it damages
Hemp streak primarily affects Cannabis sativa. The disease significantly hinders the plant's metabolic functions, leading to stunted growth and reduced fiber quality.
The reduction in fiber tensile strength renders the plant material less suitable for industrial applications, causing substantial economic losses for hemp processors.
In addition to yield loss, the infection negatively impacts the development of seeds and inflorescences, decreasing the overall output of the harvest.
Infected plants exhibit reduced vigor, making them more susceptible to opportunistic pathogens, such as root rots or fungal leaf spots, further compromising crop health.
Systemic viral infection disrupts the plant's nutrient uptake, which results in poor biomass accumulation even under optimal irrigation and fertilization conditions.
Signs of infestation
The most diagnostic sign is the appearance of chlorotic streaks or stripes running parallel to the leaf veins, which often look like light green or yellowish bands.
As the infection progresses, the leaves may show signs of curling, distortion, and yellowing, while the entire plant displays a noticeably stunted growth habit.
Shortened internodes give the plant a compact and abnormal appearance. In severe cases, necrotic lesions may develop on the stems as the vascular tissue begins to collapse.
The inflorescences of infected hemp plants are often deformed and display paleness, which negatively affects the quality and quantity of the eventual grain harvest.
During a field inspection, infected plants often appear in clusters, particularly if the virus has been spread by soil-borne vectors like nematodes in the root zone.
Control measures
There are no direct chemical treatments available to cure plants once they are infected with the virus, making prevention the only viable management strategy.
Farmers must prioritize the use of certified, virus-free seeds and seedlings to prevent the introduction of the pathogen into new growing areas.
Implementing a rigorous integrated pest management (IPM) program to control potential insect and nematode vectors is essential to limit the secondary spread of the virus.
Crop rotation and the removal of weed hosts from field margins are critical practices to reduce the reservoir of the virus in the environment.
Strict sanitation protocols, including the thorough disinfection of tools and machinery after working in infected zones, prevent the mechanical transfer of the virus between fields.
