The fungus is characterized by the production of pycnidia, which are specialized asexual fruiting bodies embedded within the host tissue. Inside these structures, conidia are produced and dispersed under high humidity conditions.

The specific name lunata refers to the crescent or moon-like shape of its conidia. This unique morphological feature is the primary tool used by pathologists for laboratory identification of the fungus.

The biological cycle of this pathogen is closely linked to plant debris, where it can survive in a dormant state for long periods. This makes it a persistent threat in environments where crop rotation is not practiced.

The pathogen is opportunistic and thrives when the microclimate is compromised, especially in areas with poor ventilation and high relative humidity. It frequently attacks plants that have been weakened by environmental stress or mechanical injury.
