Engineering and Breeding Profile: Sunrise Watermelon

Developed by the Russian Research Institute of Vegetable Breeding and Seed Production (VNIISSOK), the 'Sunrise' watermelon is a mid-season variety engineered for adaptability in temperate climates. Its agronomic value lies in the balance between its life cycle duration and the consistency of fruit quality.

Key Performance Indicators

• Growth Cycle: Reaches technical maturity in 85–95 days from germination, placing it in the mid-season category.
• Fruit Morphology: Produces round-shaped fruits with a weight range of 3 to 5 kg. This standardized sizing is advantageous for supply chain logistics and retail packaging.
• Internal Quality: The flesh is pink-to-red with a high sugar concentration. Its structural density provides superior transportability, reducing losses during distribution.

Field Performance and Application

The primary advantage of the 'Sunrise' variety is its resilience to environmental stress. The breeding program focused on creating a cultivar capable of withstanding fluctuations in temperature, a critical factor in regions with volatile weather patterns. Recommended for cultivation in open fields or under temporary plastic covers, the variety allows for uniform yield distribution. When planted at an optimal density of 7,000–8,000 plants per hectare, the crop exhibits excellent nutritional uptake efficiency, resulting in predictable fruit weight and caliber across the entire plot.
