Tomato SOCKOL

Technical Overview of the Tomato Cultivar 'Sokol'

The 'Sokol' tomato, developed by researchers at Michurinsk State Agrarian University (authors: V. I. Kozak, M. A. Myagkova, S. V. Pustovalova), is a determinate variety engineered for predictable development and consistent fruit weight. The core technical advantage of this variety lies in its growth habit, which allows for efficient field management without complex pruning protocols.

Key Botanical and Physical Parameters

The determinate nature of the plant ensures that vertical growth is self-limiting. This is a critical factor for producers looking to optimize harvesting schedules and reduce labor intensity in plant maintenance.

• Fruit Weight: Ranging from 150 to 200 grams, the fruits are positioned in the optimal market segment for both fresh retail and commercial processing.
• Fruit Geometry: The flat-round (oblate) shape provides uniform sizing and mechanical strength, which minimizes bruising and losses during post-harvest transport.
• Color Profile: The deep red exterior signals a high density of carotenoids and a balanced biochemical composition.

Practical Field Application

The genetic selection performed by Michurinsk GAU focuses on robustness and environmental adaptability. 'Sokol' is designed to withstand typical climatic fluctuations in the region while maintaining productivity in open field environments. By selecting this variety, growers prioritize structural simplicity and crop consistency—an ideal choice for farms aiming to minimize the use of complex support systems while maximizing the uniformity of the harvest.
