Tomato LEON TOLSTOY

Working with the Lev Tolstoy Tomato

If you are looking for a variety that is forgiving to beginners while delivering commercial-grade performance, Lev Tolstoy by Gavrish is your go-to «workhorse». As an indeterminate tomato, it requires single-stem training, but with proper care, it consistently yields 70-100 tons per hectare. In real-world conditions, the plant proves highly resistant to temperature fluctuations, making it a reliable choice for both open fields and polytunnels.

Agronomy and Disease Resistance

The main headache for any agronomist is disease management. Lev Tolstoy effectively removes this burden thanks to its genetic resistance to Tobacco Mosaic Virus, Fusarium wilt, and Cladosporium. By reducing the need for intensive fungicide applications, you significantly lower production costs and labor hours.

Harvesting and Transport

The fruit, weighing between 80 and 200 grams, features an attractive round or flat-round shape and a rich red color. The dense, 3-4 chamber structure ensures excellent shelf life and marketability. These tomatoes withstand long-distance shipping with minimal loss. With a 120-130 day maturity period, this mid-late variety is ideal for those targeting the second half of the season.

• Management: Consistent pruning/de-suckering is required for optimal airflow.
• Fertilization: Responds exceptionally well to potassium-based fertilizers, which firm up the fruit.
• Efficiency: High yield potential of up to 100 tons per hectare if spacing and irrigation are managed correctly.

This is not a high-maintenance variety, but it does require disciplined crop management. If you follow Gavrish’s agronomic guidelines, you can expect a stable, high-quality harvest that holds up perfectly in the supply chain.
