Agronomic Profile and Cultivation of the 'Kobi' Hybrid

The 'Kobi' sunflower, a 2025 release from the 'Novoiehorivka-Agro' farm, is a mid-early oilseed hybrid specifically bred for the Forest-Steppe zone of Ukraine. Achieving its full yield potential requires strict adherence to agronomic practices that account for its specific morphological traits.

Sowing Strategy and Plant Density

Given its medium plant height and large head size, 'Kobi' requires a balanced approach to plant density to ensure each plant has sufficient space for optimal head development. The head is slightly convex and naturally turns downward, providing protection against excess moisture and bird damage.

• Sowing Timing: Planting should commence when soil temperatures at seeding depth reach +8...+10°C. The mid-early maturity group allows for flexible scheduling, helping to avoid critical growth stages during peak summer heat.
• Spacing: Proper spacing is essential to prevent competition for light, especially given the large leaf size and moderate green intensity of the foliage.

Growth Stage Management

During early development, 'Kobi' shows vigorous growth. The presence of anthocyanin coloration in the hypocotyl indicates good adaptability to the cooler conditions of early spring. Weed control is critical during the 2–4 leaf stage, as the hybrid's large leaves will eventually create a dense canopy that suppresses weed competition.

The budding and flowering phases are crucial. The hybrid features strong pubescence at the top of the stem, which acts as a natural barrier against certain pests. Boron application at the 6–8 leaf stage is highly recommended to support head development and ensure efficient pollination, given the structure of the tubular flowers and pollen production.

Soil and Moisture Requirements

This hybrid thrives in the fertile soils of the Forest-Steppe. Its well-developed root system allows 'Kobi' to efficiently utilize moisture stored during the autumn-winter period. In drought-prone conditions, maintaining soil moisture through proper tillage and minimizing evaporation is key to ensuring consistent performance throughout the growing season.
