A 2025 confectionery hybrid designed for stable yields in the Steppe and Forest-Steppe regions of Ukraine.
Description
A Breeding Breakthrough from the V.Ya. Yuriev Institute
In 2025, the State Register of Plant Varieties of Ukraine was updated with a new achievement of domestic selection — the confectionery sunflower hybrid "IR Chudovyi". This F1 hybrid is the result of years of research by scientists at the V.Ya. Yuriev Institute of Plant Production of the NAAS, aimed at creating a product that combines high adaptability to climatic risks with excellent seed quality.
Adaptation to Steppe and Forest-Steppe Challenges
The main advantage of "IR Chudovyi" lies in its zoning for the most productive yet demanding regions of Ukraine — the Steppe and Forest-Steppe. The hybrid demonstrates stability in conditions where other varieties might lose yield due to temperature stress. The plant's genetic potential allows for the efficient use of moisture and nutrients, which is confirmed by its morphological features: a well-developed leaf blade and balanced stem development.
Morphology and Biological Features
According to the official UPOV description, the hybrid possesses several specific traits that distinguish it from competitors:
- Early Flowering: allows the plant to avoid peak summer droughts, which is critical for forming high-quality kernels.
- Head Structure: the medium size and slightly convex shape ensure uniform seed ripening. The downward-facing position of the head protects the harvest from excess moisture and birds.
- Anthocyanin Coloration: the strong intensity of anthocyanin coloration in the hypocotyl and stigma indicates high physiological activity during the early stages of development.
"IR Chudovyi" lacks branching, which simplifies the harvesting process and helps achieve high purity of the commercial batch. The absence of unnecessary lateral heads concentrates all the plant's resources on the central inflorescence, which is a key factor in obtaining a large, confectionery-grade seed fraction.
