Sunflower GIRAL

French breeding for high oil content

The Giral sunflower hybrid from Laboulet Semences is the result of breeding work led by Veronigue Tramcourt, focused on maximizing crop potential in temperate climates. The technological emphasis is placed on combining early maturity with intense oil accumulation.

Biological traits and yield potential

The growing season of this hybrid is 90–100 days. This early maturity allows the crop to avoid peak summer droughts and provides a timely harvest window for winter crop sowing. Key plant technical parameters:

• Stem height: 170–190 cm, ensuring robust vegetative mass and strong competition against weeds during initial growth stages.
• Head: large size and well-filled, which guarantees a high thousand-seed weight.
• Seeds: large, with a high oil content (50–55%), which is critical for processing profitability.

Agronomic reliability: comprehensive protection

The core value of Giral lies in its "immune" profile. Breeders have engineered high tolerance to a wide spectrum of pathogens, which is vital for reducing fungicide pressure:

• Phytopathological resistance: the hybrid demonstrates effective defense against Verticillium, Sclerotinia, Phomopsis, and rust.
• Root system protection: high resistance to root rot and black leg allows for stable stand density even under adverse weather conditions.
• Specific threats: genetic resistance to downy mildew (including strains affecting corn and sorghum) and gray mold minimizes the risk of harvest loss in regions with high humidity.

Choosing Giral means opting for a balanced plant that combines a fast start, excellent oil indicators, and a powerful protective shield against major sunflower diseases typical of the European farming zone.
