The sorghum variety «Zernogradsky Amber» is one of the earliest and most widely used sugar sorghum varieties. It is distinguished by its maturity, which allows it to mature in more northern regions, up to the southern half of the Ukrainian forest-steppe. This variety has high cold resistance, drought resistance, and indifference to soil conditions, which makes it universal for various cultivation areas, except for the most southern regions, such as the Caucasus and Central Asia.
Plants of the variety «Zernogradsky Amber» are characterized by high growth strength and increased bushiness. The stems contain up to 15% sugar, and the sugar concentration in the stem juice reaches 24%. Maximum sugar content is observed at the full grain maturity stage. Despite the relatively low syrup yield compared to other varieties, this variety is widely used to obtain sweet syrup and molasses, as well as for silage.
The grain of this variety is covered or semi-covered, which makes threshing difficult. Nevertheless, «Zernogradsky Amber» is considered one of the best feed sorghum varieties for most growing regions, thanks to its adaptability and resistance to unfavorable conditions. It combines good feed quality and the possibility of use in the food industry for producing syrups.
