Sorghum hybrid of the variety Donetskaya 5 is an annual cereal plant widely used in Ukrainian agriculture for grain and silage production. This variety is characterized by high yield and drought resistance, making it especially valuable for cultivation in southern regions of the country, as well as in steppe and forest-steppe zones. The vegetation period of Donetskaya 5 ranges from 115 to 140 days, with plant height varying from 60 to 200 cm. Grains are egg-shaped and may be red or white, with a 1000-grain weight reaching 28-30 grams. The potential yield is up to 120 centners per hectare for grain and up to 900 centners for silage, although actual yields typically fall within the range of 32-38 centners per hectare. Donetskaya 5 has a powerful root system reaching depths of up to three meters, providing good nutrition and resistance to saline soils. The plant is thermophilic and light-loving, with an optimal growth temperature range of +30 to +35 degrees Celsius, and a minimum germination temperature of +12 degrees Celsius. Sorghum leaves are lanceolate with pointed edges, and inflorescences are panicles up to 60 cm long. The variety responds well to irrigation and application of mineral fertilizers, particularly nitrogen-phosphorus and complex NPK fertilizers, which contribute to increased yields. When grown on various soil types, including light and heavy soils, fertilizer application should be adjusted accordingly: nitrogen-phosphorus fertilizers are recommended for chestnut soils, while phosphorus fertilizers are needed for chernozems. Proper agronomic practices are essential for successful cultivation of Donetskaya 5: seed treatment with fungicides before sowing, plowing, rolling with a spiked roller to accelerate germination, timely harrowing, and inter-row cultivation for wide-row plantings. The plant is prone to fungal and infectious diseases, so disease-resistant varieties are preferred. Grain harvest is conducted by direct combine harvesting at full maturity, while late varieties require desiccation two weeks before harvest. Donetskaya 5 is a versatile forage crop that also improves soil structure through its robust root system, enhancing aeration, water retention, and drainage properties of the soil.
