Rye (Secale cereale) is an annual or biennial grass plant, widely cultivated in various countries, including Ukraine. It has a powerful fibrous root system penetrating up to 1.2-2 meters, allowing it to thrive even on light sandy soils. Thanks to its high physiological activity, rye effectively absorbs nutrients from the soil, including insoluble compounds. The rye stem is straight, hollow, and ranges from 70 to 200 cm in height, with broad-lanceolate bluish-green leaves measuring 15-30 cm in length. The inflorescence is an elongated complex ear 5-15 cm long with a sturdy axis, while the grain has an oblong shape with varied coloring, ranging from white to dark brown.
Growing rye requires adherence to certain agricultural practices. Important factors include proper seed selection, use of fertilizers, fungicides, and herbicides, as well as compliance with crop rotation. Rye is characterized by high tillering intensity, forming 4 to 8 shoots, and under favorable conditions, up to 50-90. This contributes to high crop yields. In Ukrainian agricultural practice, particularly in the Chernihiv and Kharkiv regions, various rye varieties and hybrids are used, such as «Picasso» and «Zabava», which are adapted to local conditions and ensure a stable harvest.
Rye is widely used in agriculture and the food industry. It serves as raw material for bread production, animal feed, and other products. Thanks to its resilience to unfavorable soil and climate conditions and its ability to quickly absorb nutrients, rye is an important crop for the agricultural sector. Proper agricultural management, including timely sowing and harvesting, allows maximizing the potential of this crop and ensuring high quality and quantity of the harvest.
