When selecting seeds for the new season, predictability is our top priority. Fernando KWS from the German breeder KWS has proven to be a solid working tool that doesn't let us down. This simple linear oilseed rape hybrid is known for its remarkable plasticity. In our experience, it handles temperature fluctuations effectively, which is a game-changer for regions with unpredictable spring weather.

Planting density and field experience

We have tested various planting schemes. The recommended density is between 500,000 and 700,000 plants per hectare. Our "sweet spot" is around 600,000; at this density, the plants maximize their nutrient uptake, and the root system develops strongly enough to survive winter stresses. While 700,000 is feasible, we found that on nutrient-rich soils, it can lead to excessive biomass, which complicates the harvesting process.

Yield potential and harvesting

The yield potential of 50–60 c/ha is a realistic target if the protection technology is applied correctly. Fernando KWS shows high resistance to lodging, which is crucial for our combine operators—minimizing harvest losses at the header. The hybrid is not demanding in terms of maintenance; standard fertilization and fungicide programs are sufficient to unlock the full genetic potential of this German variety.
