Chickling vetch Riviera

Technical Profile of the 'Riviera' Chickling Vetch (Lathyrus sativus)

Developed by the Federal Scientific Center for Vegetable Growing (Originator #531), the 'Riviera' variety is a highly specialized agricultural solution designed for producers focusing on high-protein forage and soil improvement. Unlike standard pulse crops, 'Riviera' offers a unique physiological architecture optimized for specific growing conditions.

Biological and Morphological Features

• Floral Markers: The pink color of the flowers is a key indicator of varietal purity, reflecting the metabolic intensity during the flowering phase.
• Grain Biochemistry: The superior crude protein content makes this crop a strategic asset for livestock farms, directly impacting the cost-efficiency of feed rations.
• Field Performance: The selection process focused on achieving balanced plant architecture, which significantly simplifies direct harvesting and minimizes shatter loss during threshing.

Field Application and Agronomic Impact

The 'Riviera' variety utilizes a robust root system to access otherwise unavailable forms of phosphorus, enhancing the nutritional balance of the soil. As a legume, it performs critical nitrogen fixation, serving as an excellent predecessor in crop rotation sequences. The variety’s life cycle is engineered for resilience, ensuring stable biomass accumulation even when soil moisture availability is sub-optimal during the growing season.
