Pelargonium Akvarel

Pelargonium 'Aquarel': A versatile cascade for your greenery

Developed by the Subtropical Scientific Center of the RAS in Georgia, the 'Aquarel' cultivar is a testament to functional plant breeding. Unlike many standard varieties, this is an ampelous pelargonium designed specifically to break the vertical plane of balconies and terraces.

Why choose 'Aquarel'?

• Architectural Growth: The variety features a pronounced cascading growth habit. Its stems naturally arch downward, making it a professional choice for hanging baskets and tall containers where a lush, draping effect is required.
• Multi-environment performance: 'Aquarel' is exceptionally versatile. It performs reliably in open-ground landscapes, garden containers, or as an indoor decorative element. Its ability to adapt to moving from an outdoor summer setting to an indoor winter environment is a key advantage for home gardeners.
• Robust Genetics: Bred at the Subtropical Scientific Center, this cultivar is characterized by its endurance. It is less demanding regarding specialized fertilizers compared to sensitive, hyper-bred European hybrids.

Pros and Cons

The primary advantage of 'Aquarel' is its low-maintenance structure. It inherently maintains its ampelous shape, reducing the need for constant, aggressive pruning. However, growers should be aware of its light requirements: as a sun-loving plant, a lack of adequate light can lead to elongated internodes and a decrease in density. Maintaining optimal lighting is the "price" one pays for its rapid, cascading growth. Additionally, since it produces a dense cluster of foliage, good air circulation is essential to keep the plant thriving, especially in indoor conditions.

Who is this for?

This cultivar is ideal for gardeners and landscapers who prioritize both aesthetics and functionality. It is the perfect choice for those who want to decorate a patio in the summer and bring that same greenery inside during the colder months. For professionals dealing with vertical container gardening, 'Aquarel' offers a predictable, high-quality result that matches the rigors of seasonal urban landscaping.
