Cultivation Practice for Zhayvir Fescue

When selecting perennial grasses for forage production, finding the balance between low-maintenance requirements and protein yield per hectare is essential. The Zhayvir variety, developed by the Institute of Agriculture of the NAAS, addresses the needs of farms focused on intensive hay and pasture management. In the field, this cultivar demonstrates a predictable response to standard agronomic interventions.

Operational Agronomic Features

• Establishment and Growth Rates: Zhayvir is valued for its vigorous initial development. Under Ukrainian conditions, the variety shows strong tillering indicators within the first year of sowing, allowing for earlier harvest cycles.
• Forage Value: The variety emphasizes leafiness, which is the critical parameter for crude protein content. Technologically, it allows for the production of balanced forage that is palatable to livestock both fresh and preserved.
• Stress Tolerance: For the operator, this means reduced risks of crop failure. The grass manages temperature fluctuations and spring frosts well, which are common in steppe and forest-steppe regions.

Stand Maintenance Recommendations

To maintain high productivity, Zhayvir requires a standard approach to nitrogen fertilization after each cutting. The variety responds well to top-dressing, allowing the agronomist to plan yields based on the farm's financial capabilities. Optimal stand density creates a dense sod that effectively suppresses weeds, reducing the need for herbicide applications. The regenerative capacity of the stands after intensive grazing remains high for 4-5 years, provided that mowing regulations are followed.
