Description
Sverdlovchanka 86 is a diploid variety of timothy (Dactylis glomerata L.) intended for hay and seed production, as well as for pasture and fodder crop rotations.
Externally, the plant is characterized by an open-bush habit with a height of 110–150 cm. Stems are ribbed, medium roughness, hairless, and green. Leaves are linear, hairless, covered with a matte bloom, and retain a bright green color. Inflorescences are one-sided, branched panicles of medium looseness, pale green with a distinct purple tint; spikelets are oval, also pale green with a purple tone. Seeds are elongated, light yellow with a pinkish hue.
The variety is distinguished by high tillering and excellent regrowth after mowing throughout the vegetation period and over the years. When used for pastures, it quickly recovers after grazing, providing 3–4 full tillers, and also withstands trampling well.
Super-abundant yields are achieved in the second or third year of life: average hay yield from two cuts is about 70 c/ha. The variety is drought-resistant but gives the highest figures on moist soils. However, it is sensitive to flooding and excessive moisture – it can withstand a raised level of groundwater for no more than 14 days.
Seeding can be done in the early period of each zone while sufficient moisture of the upper soil layer is maintained. Seeding rate: in pure stands – 15–20 kg/ha, in mixed stands – 8–10 kg/ha. The variety grows easily on light loamy soils and does not require special care.
Thus, Sverdlovchanka 86 represents a reliable and productive option for creating hay meadows, pastures, and fodder crop rotations, ensuring stable hay and seed yields with moderate soil and climate requirements.
