Onion Despina

Efficiency and Scale: The Despina Onion Advantage

The 'Despina' onion hybrid, developed by Takii Europe B.V., is engineered for large-scale commercial farming where efficiency and post-harvest performance are paramount. As a long-day variety, it is designed for growers who require a robust, uniform crop capable of high yields and extended shelf-life, reaching its peak in the 170–180 day maturity window.

Agronomic Performance and Mechanization

The core advantage of Despina lies in its suitability for industrial-scale operations. With a yield potential of 70–90 tons per hectare, it is a powerhouse for intensive agriculture. The hybrid features a solid, intense brown skin that acts as a protective layer, essential for modern mechanized harvesting, significantly reducing mechanical damage during the extraction and sorting processes.

Key features for production managers:

• Uniformity: Its flat to round-cuboid bulb shape is perfectly suited for automated grading and netting lines.
• Shelf-Life: Capable of storing for 6–7 months, providing growers with the market flexibility to time their sales for peak demand.
• Market Quality: The crisp, white interior quality remains consistent, making it highly desirable for both retail and wholesale markets.

For those looking to optimize their operation with a reliable, late-maturing hybrid, Despina offers the consistency required to manage risk and ensure quality product delivery throughout the winter months.
