OMSKAYA 7 — a medium-maturity variety of variable alfalfa (Medicago sativa L. nothosubsp. varia), intended for cultivation in the Western Siberia region. The plants are characterized by medium height in spring and a semi-erect bush with dark green leaves. The average yield of dry matter in the region is 52.5 c/ha, which exceeds the standard by 2.4 c/ha. During testing, the variety demonstrated high resistance to diseases, making it a reliable choice for farmers.
Studies conducted in the forest-steppe zone of the North Zauralye and Western Siberia showed that in variable alfalfa, including the OMSKAYA 7 variety, there is a prolonged and drawn-out flowering period lasting from 72 to 78 days. The plants form a large number of flowers — from 2187 to 2753 per plant, of which 57.9–58.2 % successfully develop into pods. The daily appearance of new flowers is about 1.3 %, which ensures continuous growth of vegetative and generative shoots and contributes to high productivity.
A feature of the variety is its adaptation to pollination conditions, manifested in partial autotriping and ensuring reliable visitation of flowers by pollinators. This contributes to the formation of a high number of seeds with the number of seeds per pod averaging from 1.73 to 2.46. Thanks to these characteristics, the OMSKAYA 7 variety is suitable for efficient cultivation to obtain both green mass and seed material, making it universal and promising for agricultural production.
