Cobaea *Cobaea scandens* – is a magnificent vine with large bell-shaped flowers that can reach a diameter of up to 8 cm and change color from greenish-yellow to white or purple depending on the variety. The plant grows quickly, reaching heights of 2 to 4 meters, and thanks to its clingy tendrils, it attaches itself to any vertical surface independently, making it an ideal choice for greening balconies, pergolas, fences, and hanging baskets.
Cobaea prefers a warm climate, sunny or slightly shaded areas with loose, fertile, well-drained soil. Seeds are sown at the end of February–beginning of March; after 10–15 days, seedlings appear and the growing shoots are pricked out into individual pots. When planting in open ground, plants are placed at a distance of 70–100 cm, and stakes are used to support young growth. Regular watering is especially important in hot weather, but overwatering must be avoided to prevent fungal diseases of the root system.
For full flowering, cobaea requires balanced nutrition: in the early growth stage – mainly nitrogen fertilizers, and closer to July – phosphorus, potassium, and microelements. With an excess of nitrogen, the plant will continue to grow foliage at the expense of flower loss. Cobaea can be grown as an annual or a perennial if stored in a cool, light room during the winter. Thanks to its bright beauty and ease of care, it becomes a popular element of vertical gardens and decorative compositions.
