Gooseberry High Lock

A Proven Standard in Ukrainian Selection

The 'Vysokyi Zamok' (High Castle) gooseberry variety is a product of the Lviv Research Station of the Institute of Horticulture of the NAAS. It was developed to provide high productivity and adaptation to Ukraine's diverse climate. On the market, this variety is recognized for its consistency and excellent berry quality, making it a reliable choice for both home gardeners and small-scale commercial farms.

Agronomic Characteristics and Productivity

This mid-season variety has a growing period of 106–120 days. The bush is notably vigorous, reaching a height of 1.4–1.7 meters, which requires proper pruning and training, especially given the plant's significant thorniness. While the thorns demand careful handling during harvest, this is balanced by the plant's high resistance to powdery mildew, the primary challenge in gooseberry cultivation.

• Berry: Large, weighing 5 to 7 grams, with a distinct dark burgundy to black color.
• Flavor Profile: A well-balanced sweet and sour taste, ideal for both fresh consumption and culinary processing.
• Cold Tolerance: Hardy down to -28°C, providing sufficient protection for most regional conditions.

Market Application

Due to its firm skin and rich flavor, 'Vysokyi Zamok' is a versatile option. The berries hold up well during transport, making them a viable product for the fresh market. Furthermore, the variety is excellent for processing: it produces high-quality jams, jellies, and dessert wines. It serves as a dependable workhorse variety for those seeking a time-tested combination of yield, robustness, and disease resistance.
