Gladiolus Sofia

Inflorescence Architecture and Selection Features

The 'Sofia' gladiolus is a product of professional selection by the M.M. Gryshko National Botanical Garden of the NAS of Ukraine, engineered for high adaptability to local soil and climatic conditions. Classified as a 'giant' gladiolus, the plant reaches a total height of 120–140 cm, with a flower spike (rachis) of 60–80 cm. This geometry provides structural balance, ensuring the stem remains upright under the weight of the massive inflorescence.

Technical Specifications of the Flower

• Corolla diameter: 11–13 cm, classifying the variety as large-flowered.
• Morphology: Pronounced ruffling of the petals, which adds significant visual volume to the flower.
• Color profile: A delicate, sophisticated blend of cream and soft pink hues.
• Density: 8–10 simultaneously blooming florets on a single spike, creating a dense, continuous vertical array.

Technically, the 'Sofia' variety excels due to its high stress resistance. The selection work conducted at the botanical garden has significantly enhanced the bulb's hardiness, allowing it to overwinter directly in the soil under favorable conditions. For professional growers, this translates to reduced operational costs associated with annual harvesting and complex storage logistics typical for many gladiolus varieties.

Practical Application

The primary value of this variety lies in its dual functionality. For professional cut-flower production, the combination of stem rigidity and rachis length ensures excellent durability during transit and long vase life. In landscape design, the dense flower spikes serve as a robust focal point, maintaining vertical integrity even in open spaces exposed to gusty winds or heavy rain, making it a reliable solution for various climatic zones.
