NORTHERN BLUE EGGPLANT

The Northern Blue eggplant variety is an early-ripening hybrid suitable for cultivation both in film-covered structures and in open ground. The plant is semi-spreading, reaching up to 170 cm in height in greenhouses and about a meter outdoors. The fruits are oval-shaped, weighing from 230 to 270 grams, with a bright lilac color at technical maturity and brown at biological maturity. The flesh is snow-white, non-bitter, with high sugar and vitamin C content, giving the fruits excellent taste qualities and making them particularly valuable for pickling and salting.


Northern Blue is characterized by high resistance to adverse weather conditions, including temperature fluctuations and reduced lighting, which allows for cultivation even in northern regions. The plant is light-loving and heat-loving, preferring fertile, well-drained soils with a neutral reaction, while acidic soils require liming. For successful cultivation, it is recommended to place the crop on well-lit and wind-protected areas. Seed sowing for seedlings is carried out at the end of February to the first half of March, and transplanting into greenhouses or under film cover is done in May when the soil temperature is above 14°C.


Care of the eggplant includes moderate watering and feeding with mineral fertilizers, the first of which is carried out 10-15 days after seedling transplant, and the second at the beginning of fruit formation. For feeding, compost and complex mineral fertilizers with a low nitrogen content and equal amounts of phosphorus and potassium are recommended. When shaping the bush, it is important to tie branches to prevent them from breaking under the weight of the fruits. Thanks to its characteristics and unpretentiousness, the Northern Blue variety is an excellent choice for obtaining an early and abundant yield of high-quality eggplants.
