Field Experience: Growing 'Donskoy Rodnik'

When dealing with bee-pollinated varieties, the main priority is fruit set reliability. Bred by Alexey Alexeyevich Mashtakov and his team, 'Donskoy Rodnik' proves to be a highly predictable and robust variety. Whether grown in open ground or glass greenhouses, the plant exhibits a generative growth habit—it doesn't waste energy on excessive foliage, focusing instead on producing a steady, high-quality crop.

Yield and Maturation

We started harvesting the first fruits between 40 and 45 days after emergence. This is an excellent turnaround time for a standard field cucumber. The fruit length stays consistently between 7 and 10 cm, making them ideal for pickling and canning—they don't grow into bulky, hollow "barrels" and fit perfectly into jars.

Disease Resistance and Maintenance

The biggest challenge for any grower is managing downy mildew and powdery mildew. 'Donskoy Rodnik' excels here thanks to its innate resistance. Over a season of intensive use, I noticed that even with minimal preventative spraying, leaf damage was negligible. This significantly reduces chemical costs and simplifies the daily management routine.
