Cucumber BOCHKOVAY

Growing the 'Bochkovoy' Cucumber: Practical Insights

This bee-pollinated variety is a powerhouse for growers who prefer time-tested agricultural methods over greenhouse-only parthenocarpics.

Cultivation and Performance

As a vegetative-type plant, 'Bochkovoy' requires a disciplined approach to pruning and trellising. Whether you are working in an open field or glass greenhouses, the growth rate is aggressive. The plant reaches maturity in just 40–45 days, providing a fast turnaround for your harvest cycle.

Harvesting for Quality

The fruits are distinctively dark green with large, prominent bumps—the ideal texture for absorbing brine. At a length of 7–9 cm and an average weight of 80 grams, these cucumbers fit perfectly into standard jars. They are dense and rarely develop hollow centers, which is a major advantage for commercial pickling operations.

• Maintenance: Due to its vigorous vegetative growth, avoid over-planting in a single row to ensure adequate light penetration.
• Disease Management: Exceptional resistance to anthracnose reduces the need for frequent chemical interventions.
• Harvesting Strategy: Daily picking is recommended to keep the size consistent and prevent the fruit from becoming too large for canning.
