Corn Porumbeni 461 is an early-maturing simple modified hybrid developed by the Institute of Plant Growing "Porumbeni" in Moldova. The hybrid is characterized by high yield and versatility, allowing cultivation for both grain and silage. The projected grain yield ranges from 15 to 20 tons per hectare, while silage yield ranges from 45 to 80 tons per hectare. The corn exhibits good initial growth energy, reaches a height of up to 230 cm, has a stem thickness of about 2.5 cm, and 18-19 leaves. The cylindrical ear, up to 30 cm long, is positioned at a height of 70-75 cm and contains 18 rows of yellow, toothed kernels with a red inner ear color. The 1000-kernel weight is approximately 340 grams, and the grain yield percentage reaches about 84%.
The hybrid demonstrates high resistance to diseases, pests, drought, and stress conditions, ensuring stable yields under various climatic conditions. It is also resistant to lodging and stem breakage, but it is recommended not to exceed the optimal planting density to preserve these traits. The recommended planting density varies depending on the level of soil moisture: 40-45 thousand plants per hectare under insufficient or moderate moisture, 45-50 thousand under adequate moisture, and 60-70 thousand plants per hectare when using irrigation systems.
To achieve maximum productivity, agronomists recommend mandatory mineral fertilization and, if possible, additional soil moisture. Due to its characteristics and adaptability, corn Porumbeni 461 is among the top performers in yield among hybrids of its class and is suitable for cultivation in various regions, including central, southern, and northern areas of Ukraine.
