PL 238 is an early hybrid of sweet corn, intended for cultivation in open ground. The vegetation period is 70-72 days, allowing for harvest within relatively short timeframes. Plants reach a height of up to 180 cm and are distinguished by high resistance to heat, diseases, and adverse growing conditions, making the hybrid a reliable choice for farmers.
The ears of corn PL 238 have an attractive marbled color with 25% white and 75% yellow kernels, giving them an original market appearance. The kernels are characterized by a tender, juicy, and sweet taste with sugar content exceeding 24%. This corn is ideal for fresh consumption, adding to salads, grilling, as well as canning and freezing, expanding its culinary applications.
For successful cultivation of PL 238, a sunny and warm climate with a minimum germination temperature of about 13 degrees is required. The plant prefers neutral soils with an optimal pH level around 6 and does not tolerate cold, acidic, clayey, saline, or wet soils. Soil preparation includes autumn tillage, application of organic and mineral fertilizers, as well as spring cultivations to control weeds. During the growth period, regular watering, fertilization, and protection from pests, especially corn borer, are necessary. Harvesting is recommended when kernel moisture is 70-75%, and to preserve sugar content, the ears should be stored under refrigerated conditions with periodic ice covering to minimize quality loss.
