Growing the «King» of kale

Redbor F1 by Bejo is not the typical cabbage variety agronomists are used to handling. From a production standpoint, it is a leafy type that demands precision during the seedling stage. With a maturity period of 120–130 days, it is a long-cycle crop. In the field, the plant performs consistently, forming a robust, curly rosette in a striking purple hue. It is important to note: there is no solid head to harvest; your yield is measured by the volume of ruffled, high-quality leaves.

Field performance and crop management

• Color: Intense purple that remains vibrant even after extended time in the field.
• Resilience: This hybrid is exceptionally cold-hardy, allowing for harvests late into autumn and even beyond the first frosts in some regions.
• Marketability: The fresh market demands impeccable aesthetics. While the leaves have a firm texture, they retain great succulence with proper irrigation, highly valued in HoReCa and retail sectors.

When managing Redbor F1, height is a key factor; by the end of the season, plants can reach 80–100 cm. This complicates mechanical harvesting, so manual labor is generally preferred to maintain leaf integrity. Nutritionally, this crop is a heavy feeder. To achieve that signature deep purple color and high-quality leaf yield, a balanced nitrogen-potassium regimen is essential. The primary challenge remains pest control, as the curly leaf structure provides excellent shelter for insects. Regular scouting is the best insurance for a marketable harvest.
