Verbena potyvirus is specialized in its host range, yet it shows high efficiency in infecting cultivated species within the Verbenaceae family. The virus acts as a systemic pathogen, invading the plant's vascular tissues and disrupting normal cellular functions.

In nature, the virus is primarily transmitted by aphid species in a non-persistent manner. This means the vector acquires the virus after very short feeding periods on infected plants and can transmit it immediately to healthy hosts.

Mechanical transmission is another significant pathway. Handling plants with tools that have not been disinfected after trimming infected tissue can spread the virus rapidly through a commercial greenhouse or garden collection.

The virus often survives in infected propagation material. When cuttings are taken from latent carriers—plants that show no visible symptoms yet—the virus is spread across new batches of seedlings.
