Therrya

The biological cycle of the fungus is characterized by the production of apothecia — small, disc-shaped fruiting bodies that emerge through the bark. These structures release spores that spread through wind and rain splash.

Once the spores land on susceptible host tissue, the mycelium penetrates deep into the inner bark and cambium. This internal colonization disrupts the tree's vascular system, preventing the flow of nutrients.

The pathogen is highly resilient and can persist for long periods in infected branches and fallen debris. Its ability to remain latent within the wood makes it a persistent threat in garden and forest environments.

As a necrotrophic parasite, Therrya kills the host tissue it colonizes, leading to the formation of localized cankers and eventually the death of entire branches or the whole tree if left untreated.

The primary symptom of Therrya infection is the premature browning and wilting of needles on affected branches. This discoloration often starts in isolated patches before spreading throughout the crown.

Upon closer inspection, the bark of infected branches will show signs of disruption. Small, dark, disc-like fruiting bodies may be visible, bursting through the epidermis as the fungus completes its reproductive stage.

Removal of the bark layer reveals discolored, necrotic tissue underneath. The wood may exhibit brownish streaks or darker patches, indicating the presence of active fungal mycelium within the phloem and xylem.

The disease typically manifests first in the lower branches, where higher humidity levels are maintained. Over time, the infection can progress upwards, causing the crown to become thin, sparse, and ragged.

In advanced stages, the tree may exhibit excessive resin flow or sap leakage near the site of infection. This is a stress response to the ongoing damage caused by the fungal colonies within the trunk.

High humidity is the most critical factor for the development and spread of Therrya. Prolonged rainfall, persistent fog, and dew provide the necessary moisture for spores to germinate and infect new tissue.

The fungus thrives in cool to moderate temperatures, making it a particular problem during damp spring and autumn seasons. Its environmental flexibility allows it to remain active across a wide range of climates.

Poor aeration in dense plantings significantly increases the risk of infection. When branches are crowded, moisture remains trapped within the canopy, facilitating the rapid movement of spores between trees.

Trees that are physically damaged by pruning tools, storms, or pests are more susceptible to entry by the pathogen. Wound sites provide an easy access point for the fungal mycelium to colonize healthy wood.

Overall tree health, influenced by soil quality and nutrient availability, plays a major role in resistance. Stressed trees struggle to produce the defenses necessary to wall off the infection, allowing the fungus to grow unchecked.

The most immediate harm from Therrya is the permanent loss of branches, which compromises the aesthetic value of ornamental conifers. This damage is often irreversible without surgical removal of the infected parts.

As the disease progresses, it causes widespread physiological stress. The disruption of water and nutrient transport forces the tree to shed needles, significantly reducing its photosynthetic capacity and growth rate.

Severe infestations can lead to the death of the entire tree. In forest settings, this causes significant economic loss and disrupts the ecological balance of the plantation, requiring large-scale management interventions.

The weakening of the tree's health makes it an easy target for secondary pests, particularly bark beetles. Often, the combined stress of the fungus and insect attack leads to the rapid decline of the tree.

Because the disease can persist in the environment, a single infected tree can become a focal point for an outbreak. Without intervention, the disease will gradually move through the stand, causing increasing damage each year.

Sanitation pruning is the cornerstone of managing Therrya. Infected branches must be removed, cutting back into healthy tissue to ensure that all traces of the fungus are eliminated from the wood.

All removed material must be destroyed, preferably through burning or deep burial. Leaving infected debris on the ground provides a continuous reservoir of spores that can re-infect the tree in the following season.

Fungicidal treatments, particularly those based on copper, can be used as a preventative measure. Applications should be timed to coincide with high-risk periods, such as wet spring weather, to protect susceptible growth.
