In their natural habitat, seeds germinate upon settling on a substrate during the receding water levels of tropical rivers. In agricultural or industrial settings, this plant is not cultivated due to its extreme requirements for high-velocity flowing water.

Biologically, Willisia is adapted to life in rapid currents where most other aquatic vegetation cannot survive. Its life cycle is strictly synchronized with the seasonal changes in the hydrological regimes of tropical rivers.

Reproduction in the wild occurs exclusively through seeds after the flowering phase is completed above the water line. Any attempts at artificial propagation require the simulation of powerful, oxygen-rich currents, which is technically difficult to maintain.

Botanically, the plant resembles algae or lichens, but it is a true flowering plant. This evolutionary adaptation allows it to occupy a distinct ecological niche that remains largely inaccessible to standard commercial crops.

The primary requirement for the growth of Willisia is clean, oxygen-rich running water with high current speeds. The plant cannot tolerate stagnant water or high levels of organic pollution in its environment.

The temperature regime must strictly follow a tropical pattern, where water temperatures remain consistently within the 24–28 degrees Celsius range. A rocky substrate is essential for the secure anchoring of the root system in the riverbed.

The light regime requires bright, diffused light, which is typical for open river channels in the equatorial zone. If the light intensity is insufficient, the plant rapidly loses its ability to bloom and reproduce.

The chemical composition of the water must be near neutral or slightly acidic with low mineral content. Willisia is extremely sensitive to fluctuations in water acidity, making it a reliable bioindicator for river ecosystem health.

Outside of its native environment, the plant demonstrates extremely low viability because it is nearly impossible to recreate the complex hydrodynamic factors required for its survival.

The main threat to Willisia populations is the alteration of hydrological river regimes caused by dam construction and human activity. Any reduction in flow velocity leads to siltation of the rocky substrate, causing the plant to perish.

Water pollution from industrial and agricultural runoff causes toxicity in this species, as members of the Podostemaceae family have very narrow ecological tolerance limits. Pesticide accumulation in sediments severely affects seed development.

There are no specific pests described for Willisia, as its harsh habitat in turbulent rapids makes it inaccessible to most classic herbivores. The primary risks to the species are strictly abiotic.

Climate change, leading to either river drought or catastrophic flooding, disrupts the fragile balance necessary for flower development. A lack of pollinators during the brief flowering period is also a significant limiting factor.

The destruction of natural habitats due to gravel or sand mining in riverbeds permanently destroys the substrate required for the plant's attachment and ongoing life cycle.
