For establishing an orchard, one- or two-year-old seedlings with a well-developed root system are selected. The planting pattern depends on the crown formation type and soil fertility, typically being 4x5 or 5x6 meters to ensure adequate lighting.

During spring planting, it is crucial to provide deep irrigation immediately after placing the seedling in the pit to prevent air pockets around the roots. Mulching the trunk circle helps retain moisture and prevents weed growth.

Industrial hazelnut propagation is most often performed vegetatively: by layers, division of the bush, or root suckers. This allows preserving the varietal characteristics of the mother plant, which is critical for obtaining a high-quality harvest.

Soil preparation begins months before planting. The area is ploughed to a depth of 40-50 cm, incorporating organic fertilizers like manure or compost, which promotes better rooting of the young culture.

Hazelnuts prefer fertile, loamy, or sandy-loam soils with a neutral or slightly acidic reaction. The culture does not tolerate waterlogged areas with high groundwater levels, as this leads to root rot.

The plant has moderate requirements for climatic conditions, but protection from strong winds is important for stable fruiting. Hazelnuts can withstand significant frosts, but spring frosts during flowering can significantly reduce yields.

Optimal light exposure is the key to forming a dense crown and setting a large number of flower buds. In significant shade, the plant stretches, and nut productivity drops sharply.

Agronomy involves regular loosening of the soil in the trunk circle, but this must be done carefully, as the hazelnut root system is shallow. The depth of loosening should not exceed 5-10 cm.

Irrigation is a critical factor during the period of intensive fruit growth, which occurs in the first half of summer. Lack of moisture during this time leads to smaller nuts and premature dropping.

Commercial hazelnut yield begins to grow from the 5th-6th year of life, reaching peak productivity by years 10-12. Depending on the variety and management, yields range from 1.5 to 3 tons of dry nuts per hectare.

Regular pruning is the key to high yield. It includes the removal of old, dry branches and thinning the center of the bush to ensure light and air access to all fruit-bearing shoots.

Applying mineral fertilizers, especially nitrogen in spring and potassium-phosphorus in autumn, significantly stimulates generative bud development. A correct balance of macro-elements extends the active fruiting period to 30-40 years.

Hazelnut pollination is cross-pollination, so planting several pollinator varieties in the orchard is recommended for a good harvest. Wind is the main carrier of pollen in hazelnut orchards.

Fruiting periodicity may be observed in some varieties, so professional agronomists aim to select combinations of plants with different flowering cycles to smooth this effect.

The main pest is the nut weevil, which lays eggs in developing fruits, leading to spoilage. Bud mites and aphids also cause significant damage by weakening the plant's overall condition.

Among diseases, powdery mildew is the most common, affecting leaves and young shoots under high humidity. Fungal infections like moniliosis can also affect fruits and blossoms, requiring timely fungicide treatment.

Disease prevention includes annual autumn cleanup and burning of fallen leaves, where fungal spores and insect larvae overwinter. Sanitary pruning also reduces the risk of spreading infection outbreaks.

Integrated pest management involves the use of biological products combined with agrotechnical methods, allowing for the production of environmentally friendly produce without excessive pesticide use.

Hazelnut harvesting begins when the fruits reach technical maturity, when the husk (involucre) begins to yellow and the shell takes on a characteristic brown color. This usually happens in August or September.

The harvesting method depends on the scale: in private orchards, nuts are gathered by hand after they fall to the ground. On large plantations, mechanical harvesters are used to shake the nuts from the bushes.

After harvesting, nuts must be immediately cleaned of husks to avoid mold growth. The ripening and drying process takes several days in a well-ventilated room at a low temperature.

Properly dried nuts have a moisture content of about 10-12%, which allows them to be stored for a long time without losing nutritional value. Excess moisture leads to rancidity and pathogen growth.

It is recommended to store the harvest in a cool, dry place with good ventilation, excluding access for rodents and avoiding direct sunlight to maintain the flavor of the kernels.
