The native distribution covers Mediterranean regions, the Caucasus, and parts of Central Asia. Traditionally, they are found in meadows and mountain slopes. In an agricultural context, these plants are primarily grown for their pharmaceutical value due to the presence of colchicine, as well as for specialized ornamental purposes in landscape gardening.

Botanically, the plant features a corm that remains dormant through the hot summer and winter. The flower structure consists of a long, slender perianth tube arising from the base. The foliage, which develops in spring, is strap-shaped and essential for storing nutrients for the upcoming flowering phase. Proper root system development is crucial for plant longevity.

Regarding cultivation, Colchicum requires well-drained, fertile soil with moderate moisture levels during the spring growing season. Excessive irrigation during the summer dormancy period must be strictly avoided to prevent corm rot. The plants thrive in open, sunny positions but can tolerate partial shade in warmer climates.

Management of the crop requires vigilance against common threats. The most significant pests are slugs and snails, which can devastate spring foliage and autumn blooms. Fungal pathogens, particularly Fusarium and gray mold, represent the primary diseases. Due to its toxicity, standard agricultural handling protocols must include wearing gloves and ensuring no contact with livestock or edible crops.
