For outdoor sowing, choose a location with loose, well-draining soil to prevent waterlogging. Space the plants adequately, about 25–30 cm apart, to allow for proper airflow and healthy plant development.

Fall sowing is also an option in temperate climates, which allows for natural stratification. This method often results in hardier seedlings that are well-adapted to the local environmental conditions.

Growing requirements

In terms of fertilization, a balanced, low-nitrogen formula applied sparingly in the spring is recommended. Avoid heavy nitrogen applications, as this promotes excessive vegetative growth rather than bloom production.

Main diseases and pests

Fungal diseases like powdery mildew are the most common threats to Silene cognata, especially in humid and poorly ventilated conditions. Keeping the foliage dry and ensuring airflow are primary preventative steps.

Aphids and spider mites may occasionally infest the plant, particularly during hot, dry spells. Early detection is key, and using insecticidal soaps can often resolve minor infestations without harming the plant.

Harvesting

Harvest seeds when the seed pods have turned brown and have begun to dry on the stem. Collect them before the pods naturally split to ensure you retain as many seeds as possible.

After harvesting, place the pods in a well-ventilated, dry area until they are completely brittle. Once dried, thresh the pods and clean the seeds by removing any chaff or plant debris.

Deadheading spent flowers throughout the season will prevent the plant from wasting energy on seed production. This practice helps the plant refocus its efforts on producing more blooms.

If harvesting for dry arrangements, cut the stems while the flowers are still in the early stages of blooming. Hang them upside down in a cool, dark place to preserve their shape and color.

Store cleaned seeds in paper envelopes in a cool, dark, and dry environment. If stored correctly, the germination viability of the seeds typically lasts for two to three years.
