Description
Sowing dates
Sowing of Mammillaria schiedeana seeds is carried out in the spring period when the daylight hours begin to increase actively, providing seedlings with the necessary level of insolation.
For successful germination, it is necessary to use loose, sterile substrate consisting of sand and leaf soil in equal proportions, pre-heated for disinfection.
Seeds are evenly distributed on the surface of moistened soil without embedding them, and then covered with glass or film to maintain stable humidity.
The temperature regime during the germination period should be maintained at 20-25 degrees Celsius, while it is important to exclude direct sunlight on the crops.
After the first shoots appear, the shelter is gradually removed, providing young cacti with fresh air to prevent the rotting of the seedlings.
Growing requirements
Mammillaria schiedeana belongs to the Cactaceae family and grows in the wild in the mountainous regions of Mexico, which determines its need for a temperate climate.
The crop prefers brightly lit areas, however, in the summer noon it requires light shading to avoid burns on the delicate skin of the stem.
The soil mixture must have excellent water and air permeability; a substrate for cacti with the addition of charcoal and brick chips is ideal.
Watering must be strictly moderate: in summer as the top layer of soil dries out, and in winter the plant enters a dormant state and requires almost no moisture.
The plant does not tolerate stagnant water in the roots, so having a high-quality drainage layer at the bottom of the pot is a critical condition for the survival of the culture.
Main diseases and pests
The most dangerous pest for this crop is the spider mite, which multiplies rapidly in conditions of low humidity and high temperature.
The root mealybug also poses a serious threat, attacking the root system and causing general growth suppression of the cactus, which is difficult to notice at early stages.
If the watering regime and air humidity are violated, the plant is often attacked by fungal infections that cause rot of the stem and roots.
To fight pests, it is necessary to use modern systemic insecto-acaricides, observing the strict dosage indicated in the application instructions.
Prevention of diseases consists of observing agricultural technology, ensuring proper drainage, and regular ventilation of the rooms where succulents are kept.
